Skip The Garage Sale, IKEA Will Buy Back Your Old Furniture For Black Friday

IKEA is painting Black Friday green this year with an eco-friendly initiative.

The world’s largest furniture store chain is doing things a bit differently this Black Friday. Instead of holding the usual mega retail sales characteristic of Black Friday, IKEA is taking a stand for sustainability by purchasing your used IKEA furniture! This buyback initiative is in direct contrast from the typical excessive consumerism of the shopping holiday and will give thousands of pieces of furniture a second life, thereby demonstrating the company’s ever-growing commitment to environmental responsibility.

Exact details of the #BuyBackFriday program have still to be released, but it is expected to run between November 24 and December 3 in 27 countries, including Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and, of course, Canada. From what has been announced in other countries, you’ll essentially be able to sell IKEA furniture items that you no longer need (as long as they’re in good condition) back to the company while earning IKEA credit to spend on items that you do need. IKEA will later refurbish and resell the purchased furniture, consequently promoting reusability and reducing the company’s impact on mass consumption.

This sustainable Black Friday alternative is a win for eco-conscious consumers and gives a whole new meaning to returning it to the store.
